What Is A Rotary Dryer

rotary dryer

The rotary dryer is a continuous drying equipment commonly used in industrial production. It uses the mechanical movement of the rotating cylinder and the convection heat exchange of the hot air to make the material contact with the heated gas, reduce or minimize the moisture content of the material, and thus achieve dehydration and drying of the wet material.

We need to know that the rotary dryer is indeed a more traditional drying equipment, but this does not affect its irreplaceable position. Let us have a detailed understanding of the rotary dryer from the aspects of principle, structure, and application.

Working principle of rotary dryer

1. Basic working process

The core working principle of rotary dryer is based on the physical mechanism of heat and mass transfer. The wet material enters from the high end of the cylinder, and is continuously lifted and scattered as the cylinder rotates slowly, forming a uniform material curtain.

At the same time, hot air (or other heating medium) passes through the cylinder in a cocurrent or countercurrent manner, making full contact with the material. In this process, heat is transferred from the hot air to the surface of the material, causing the water to evaporate; the water vapor is carried away by the flowing hot air, completing the dehydration process.

2. Thermodynamic principles

The drying process in a rotary dryer can be divided into three stages: preheating, constant drying and deceleration. In the preheating stage, the material temperature rises to the wet bulb temperature; in the constant drying stage, the surface moisture evaporates quickly and the drying rate remains stable;

when the moisture content of the material drops to the critical point, it enters the deceleration drying stage, and the internal moisture diffusion becomes a limiting factor. The duration of these three stages depends on the material properties and operating conditions.

3. Heat and mass transfer mechanism

There are multiple heat transfer modes in the rotary dryer: convection heat transfer (between hot air and material), conduction heat transfer (between material particles and when in contact with the cylinder wall) and radiation heat transfer (under high temperature conditions).

The mass transfer process mainly includes the diffusion of moisture from the inside of the material to the surface, and the evaporation of surface moisture to the gas phase. The lifting device inside the cylinder increases the dispersion of the material, expands the heat and mass transfer area, and improves the process efficiency.

Structural composition of rotary dryer

1. Main components

The barrel system is the core component of the rotary dryer, which is usually made of rolled and welded steel plates. The diameter ranges from 0.5 meters to 4 meters, and the length can reach more than 30 meters.

The barrel is slightly inclined (usually 2-5°) and the rotation speed is generally 3-20rpm. According to the process requirements, different types of lifting devices can be set inside the barrel, such as lifting type, fan type or honeycomb type, to lift and disperse the materials.

2. Auxiliary system

The heating system can be divided into two forms according to the heat source: direct heating and indirect heating. Direct heating uses hot air generated by a burner (gas, oil or coal) or a hot air furnace; indirect heating transfers heat through steam, thermal oil or electric heaters.

The dust removal system usually consists of a cyclone separator and a bag filter to recover the dried product and purify the exhaust gas. Control system Modern rotary dryers are mostly equipped with automatic control systems to monitor and adjust parameters such as temperature, speed, and air volume.

Types and characteristics of rotary dryers

1. Classification by heating method

The hot air of the direct heating rotary dryer directly contacts the material, which has high thermal efficiency but may contaminate the product; the indirect heating type transfers heat through the cylinder wall and is suitable for heat-sensitive or easily oxidized materials. The composite heating type combines the advantages of both, preheating indirectly first and then drying directly.

2. Classification by airflow direction

In the downstream dryer, the hot air and the material flow in the same direction, which is suitable for high-humidity and heat-sensitive materials; in the countercurrent type, the two flow in opposite directions, which can obtain a lower product moisture content.

In the cross-flow design, the hot air passes perpendicular to the direction of material movement, which is suitable for particles of specific shapes.

3. Special type of rotary dryer

The steam tube rotary dryer has steam heating tubes arranged in the cylinder, which is suitable for occasions requiring precise temperature control; the paddle type rotary dryer has stirring blades installed in the cylinder to enhance the processing capacity of sticky materials; the vacuum rotary dryer works under negative pressure, which can reduce the drying temperature and protect heat-sensitive components.

Industrial applications of rotary dryers

1. Applications in the chemical industry

In fertilizer production, rotary dryers are used to dry products such as urea and ammonium phosphate; in the field of inorganic salts, they process materials such as calcium carbonate and sodium sulfate.

The dye and pigment industry relies on rotary dryers to obtain powder products with standard water content. Catalyst carriers and molecular sieves in petrochemicals also use rotary drying.

2. Applications in metallurgy and building materials

The metallurgical industry uses it to dry mineral powder, concentrate and tailings; it is used for drying aluminum hydroxide before calcination in aluminum plants.

In the cement industry, rotary dryers process raw materials such as slag and coal powder; brick and tile factories use it to dry clay. In the process of resource utilization of construction waste, rotary drying has also become a key process.

3. Food and pharmaceutical applications

In the food industry, rotary dryers process starch, protein powder, yeast and other raw materials to maintain nutrients. In the pharmaceutical field, they are used to dry Chinese medicinal materials, and clean designs are mostly used. For high value-added products, precision control systems are required to ensure quality consistency.

4. Environmental protection and emerging fields

In sludge treatment, rotary dryers achieve sludge reduction and resource utilization; in the biomass energy field, they are used to dry sawdust, straw, coconut shells and other raw materials.

Selection and operation of rotary dryer

1. Selection considerations

Material properties (particle size, viscosity, thermal sensitivity), initial and final moisture content, and output requirements determine equipment specifications. The selection of heat source needs to consider energy costs, environmental protection requirements and product quality. Site conditions, investment budget and degree of automation are also important considerations.

2. Optimization of operating parameters

The optimal speed balances the material residence time and dispersion effect; the temperature setting needs to strike a balance between drying efficiency and product quality; the air volume affects the dehumidification capacity and thermal efficiency. Modern simulation technology can assist in parameter optimization and reduce the cost of trial and error.

3. Energy-saving measures

Energy consumption can be reduced by adopting measures such as waste heat recovery from exhaust gas, segmented heating, and heat-insulating cylinders. Frequency conversion motors and intelligent adjustment systems can also significantly improve energy efficiency. Multi-stage drying or combined drying processes are the cutting-edge development direction.

As a classic industrial drying equipment, the rotary dryer maintains an irreplaceable position in modern industrial production through continuous technological innovation. Its reliability and adaptability enable it to still occupy a broad market space in the face of competition from emerging drying technologies.
