Gear Machining
Gear processing refers to the process of manufacturing gears through machining, heat treatment, surface treatment and other processes. Gear processing involves a variety of technologies and processes. It is necessary to select the appropriate processing method according to the specific requirements and usage scenarios of the gears. PALET provides customized processing services for industrial gears.
Gear machining process
The process of industrial gear processing is a systematic process. The main steps include the following parts. Let us take a detailed look:
1) Material selection: Select materials suitable for gear performance requirements,
●Carbon steel 45# steel 50# steel, etc., have good mechanical properties and machinability, and are suitable for gears with lower loads.
●Alloy steel: 20Cr, 40Cr, 42CrMo, etc., alloy elements are added to improve strength and toughness, suitable for making gears with larger loads.
●Stainless steel: 304, 316, etc., have excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for gears working in harsh environments.
●Cast iron: Ductile iron and gray cast iron, with good castability, wear resistance and shock absorption, suitable for making large gears.
2)Rough machining: Rough machining is an important step in the gear machining process, which processes the material into a rough blank close to the final shape through processes such as cutting, milling or forging. The purpose of this stage is not to achieve the final size and surface quality, but to remove most of the excess material and lay the foundation for subsequent finishing.

3)Heat treatment: Heat treatment of gears can significantly improve their hardness, strength and wear resistance, thereby extending the service life of the gears and improving their working performance. The heat treatment process usually includes the following steps:
●Heating: Heating the gears to a specific high temperature to cause a phase change in their structure, usually by quenching. This process can adjust the microstructure of the material.
●Hot-keeping: Keeping the temperature at a high temperature for a certain period of time to ensure uniform temperature inside the material and promote the required phase change.
●Quenching: Cooling the gears quickly (usually with oil or water) to quickly solidify their surface, thereby increasing hardness. This step is the key to heat treatment. Rapid cooling can form a martensitic structure, thereby increasing hardness.
●Tempering: After quenching, gears tend to become extremely brittle, so tempering is usually required. The purpose of tempering is to reduce internal stress and brittleness by heating again to a lower temperature while maintaining a certain hardness and strength.
Through the heat treatment process, the hardness, strength and wear resistance of the gear have been significantly improved, making it suitable for high-load operation applications. Reasonable heat treatment parameter selection (such as temperature, time and cooling method) is also crucial to maintaining the toughness of the gear and reducing deformation.
4)Finishing: Finishing is a very important step in gear processing. Through processes such as grinding, cutting and tooth surface turning, the accuracy and surface quality of gears can be effectively improved.
●Grinding: This method can accurately trim the tooth shape of the gear, improve the finish of the tooth surface, reduce friction, and extend the service life of the gear.
●Cutting: Through the precise cutting process, the ideal tooth shape and size can be obtained to ensure that the gear can mesh smoothly during operation and reduce noise and vibration.
●Tooth surface turning: This technology is used to finely process the tooth surface of the gear to ensure that its geometry and size meet the design standards, thereby improving transmission efficiency.
Through these finishing processes, the gear can not only meet the basic functional requirements, but also maintain good performance under high load and high-speed operation conditions, which contributes to the overall reliability and stability of mechanical equipment.

5)Surface treatment:
Common surface treatment methods for gears include: nitriding, chrome plating, etc., to improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the gear surface.
●Nitriding: By heating the gear and exposing it to a nitrogen environment, nitrogen atoms penetrate into the surface of the gear to form a hardened layer. This treatment method can significantly improve the wear resistance and fatigue strength of the gear, while also improving its ability to resist corrosion.
●Chrome plating: Plating a layer of chrome on the surface of the gear can enhance its hardness and wear resistance, while improving the surface smoothness and reducing friction and wear. In addition, the chrome plating layer also has good corrosion resistance and can extend the service life of the gear.
6)Inspection: The size, tooth shape, tooth clearance, etc. of the gear are inspected by various measuring tools and equipment to ensure that they meet the design standards. The inspection process is crucial to ensure the quality and performance of the gear.
●Dimension measurement:
Vernier caliper: used to measure the outer diameter, inner diameter and thickness of the gear.
Micrometer: provides higher precision measurement and is suitable for measuring the small dimensions of the gear.
Height gauge: used to measure the height and tooth thickness of the gear.
●Tooth shape inspection:
Tooth profile gauge: a special tool used to check whether the tooth shape meets the design requirements.
Coordinate measuring machine (CMM): can accurately measure the three-dimensional shape of the gear, including tooth shape and profile.
●Tooth clearance measurement:
Feeler gauge: used to measure the clearance between teeth to ensure good gear meshing.
Contact or non-contact measuring instruments: used to detect the accuracy of tooth clearance.
●Material and hardness testing:
Hardness tester: used to measure the hardness of the gear material to ensure its wear resistance.
Metallurgical microscope: examine the microstructure of the gear material to evaluate its composition and physical properties.
●Dynamic testing:
Vibration analyzer: Detects the vibration of the gear during operation to identify potential operating problems.
Sound level meter: Measures the noise level of the gear during operation to assess its running smoothness.
By combining these tools and equipment, all aspects of the gear can be fully tested to ensure that it meets the design standards, thereby ensuring its performance and reliability in actual applications.
